On Monday, April 9, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius signaled her intention to extend the deadline for the International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 coding system to Oct. 1, 2014.
The previous deadline, Oct. 1, 2013, was seen as too aggressive, given the pace at which software developers, CMS, and insurers – along with healthcare providers – are preparing to transition to the new system. The deadline for HIPPA 5010 compliance remains unchanged: June 30, 2012.
