Beware of groups

April 11, 2011 · 6 Comments

Funny thing about the internet is who is controling what…

I recently found out someone posted an article link I written in a yahoo group:

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/ChiropracticBusiness/message/58039

I went to check it out and found out that well someone created this group which is private.

So I requested to join.  I mean that is the least they could do since they are quoting me is give me access right?

Denied!  Denied Denied!

What?

What a joke.  Who runs this group?

My guess is someone with their own motives.

Members of this group beware you are being censored and only told what someone, with their own ends in mind, wants you to be told.

Starting a group is a great way to create a conversation in the web 2.0 world.

But if you create one you need to be ready and willing to let others join in.

Raise your hand if you like censorship?

Anyone know the owner of this group?

Tell them censorship stinks and we are onto them!

I do know the moderator of that group and he’s a good guy (and chiropractor). Calling him out for denying you is juvenile. He generally tries to keep his forum free from people who sell marketing products and limits it only to doctors.

It’s run by Dr. Kevin Smith. It’s a great group full of great information and not censored at all. The group is closed to keep out practice management pimps, spammers, and guys that have special interest to promote. It’s not personal, you give great advise and content, but there are others who abuse the system so all must pay….

@Dan APPROVED! Unedited and Uncensored! Even though you don’t agree with me I love that you are getting involved in the conversion and that thinking was stimulated. BUT I will say that the attitude to keep his forum free of those who sell products is letting the entire group down. Not to be sold all the time in the forum but typically people that sell something of value can “ADD VALUE” to the conversion. I know that I had no intention of selling anything and am positive that I could have left some great content.

@John APPROVED! Unedited and Uncensored! Dr. Kevin Smith may be a great guy. But open your eyes it is censored by not letting people in. I could respect group rules and kicking people out for abusing the forum that is standard. But those so called pimps with special interest could add some value. I am glad you have enjoyed my advise and content. “but there are others who abuse the system so all must pay…” is that not the AMA’s view on chiropractors? Can such an important part of society afford to hold itself back by acting like the enemy? If these pimps gave some advise that allowed 1 more Chiropractor to better tell the story to one more person in need of chiropractic would that not make it worth it? What would BJ say?

    Dear Matt,

My name is Dr. Kevin Smith and I am the owner & moderator of the Chiropractic Business forum and the Clinical Chiropractic forum.

I created the chiropractic business forum in 2003 so chiropractors could help each other by sharing information, problem solving and masterminding. We’ve got 566 members and over 58,000 posts. I would consider that to be a successful discussion forum.

One of the reasons why this group is so successful and frequented by so many doctors is because I work hard to maintain a clean environment – free from spam, advertisements, solicitors, and gurus. Perhaps you may have something useful to contribute to the body of knowledge of marketing. But the simple fact that you are a marketing guru for chiropractors (and no doubt you’re going to be selling some kind of information product) means you are not qualified to be a member in the forum. I am not excluding you expressly. I wouldn’t allow Dan Kennedy, Jay Abraham or Tony Robbins into the group either.

You questioned my motives. So let me tell you what they are. I want to allow chiropractors to interact with each other and share information without being pestered by anyone trying to sell them something. I do not charge money to be a member of these forums. I don’t get one single dime from all the hard work I do with moderating and maintaining the forums. I do it as a way to give something back to the profession. I also get from it when I learn from other people.

I’m sorry if you felt the need to take your gripe to your public blog. It would have been my preference that you handled this professionally and quietly – via private e-mail. But perhaps you simply have a different style and way of handling conflict.

    Regards,

    Dr. Kevin Smith

@Dr. Kevin Smith APPROVED! Unedited and Uncensored! Hi Doc. Well the forum gives no indication of the owner or contact data or I may have. I think it is great that you have created a group where chiropractors can get social and help each other for free. I think that it is a shame that you think that all marketers would be spammers. I don’t typically join forums but I heard my blog was quoted so I wanted to check it out. Maybe your motives are fine. I think there is a lot to be learned from marketers and consultants whether they are a doctor or not and so your doctors only comes across as snotty to me. Don’t you think group rules on no spamming or no selling and the such while allowing others that care about natural health care profession also to join and contribute would be better for the entire group? Is it not about success no matter who the helper is? I have nothing to hide and if you feel that this should not be public maybe you should rethink your rules. I wish you well and all that are in your forum. My goal with this post is that censorship be pointed out. It got to you which was my purpose. I hope that I stimulated some forward thinking. I know I got you some more traffic at least to your forum. Be well even if still having your lock out.
