…fear.

“Leaders are visionaries with a poorly developed sense of fear and no concept of the odds against them. They make the impossible happen.” – Dr. Robert Jarvik

Some days it is a little more difficult to keep the vision going.  Focus can easily be diverted by many things….insurance company hassles…economic fears…concern over practice numbers…

Knowing the difference between an authentic threat and a false expectation can make all the difference.

I remember the uproar about Y2K….all of our computers were going to shut down…all data would be lost…all was cyber-doom!  However the sun rose the next day…adjustments were made (pun intended) and life moved on.

Some folks are saying all will end on May 21.  Another friend is convinced that Japan will have another earthquake and slide into the sea…  Maybe this is Spirit’s way of ensuring we keep our sense of humor?  Allowing these ‘special’ folk to become inspired with what is typically pretty outlandish fuel for gossip…

This is what I know.  I alone am responsible for how far I let my fear-mind run.  If I can observe the silly tendencies of my fear consciousness…I can then move forward with blissful ignorance of that fear and make the impossible truly happen.

What is the impossible that you are going to create on this day?

There has been of late quite a bit of press over the autism controversy.  This morning I noted a CNBC headline stating that a chief coordinator of the autism/vaccine issue at the CDC has been indicted for at least 13 counts of fraud and money laundering…  And yesterday noted that the author of Three Cups of Tea is being accused of literary fraud…basically making up much of the heart warming story of helping orphans in Afghanistan….  And not to be outdone, yet another chief executive of a bailed out bank facing decades in prison after accusations of fraud in the mortgage fiasco…

Sure can tend to shake a person’s faith in the integrity of America, be it literature, banking, charitable giving…the list is long.  The FEAR is….what can we have faith in?

I remember singing a song many years ago…”…this little light of mine.  I’m going to let it shine…”  I see my sons, strong young men, poised to move into the world of uncertain business, politics and economics…creating a world that hopefully will be stronger.  I also see a significant measure of cynicism as they take in the daily news.  What I am hoping is that they also see the possibilities that exist to turn back the tide of fear.

We in chiropractic have been holding a light of hope for over 116 years now.  As trust in our society ebbs and flows, I see it as our job to maintain the integrity and identity of what we stand for.  The fear is that we have to do more to be accepted….more insurance coverage…more procedures…more integration with the allopaths….

How strong is your individual light today?

Still burning the candle…

‘Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond imagination…When we liberate ourselves from our own fears, simply our presence may liberate others.’

- Marianne Williamson

As I navigate my day and deliver the gift of chiropractic I am reminded to observe my presence of mind.  More specifically that aspect of my mind or consciousness that is able to connect with that being beneath my hands.

Tax time is one of the most challenging for me.  Or if it isn’t that, some other demand for my attention that is best left at the door of the adjusting room…or better yet out in the parking lot behind the office.

“Be careful what you ask for” is a saying that reminds me of just how powerful we really are.  We really can and do create by focusing our consciousness to what me want (or don’t want which comes by default for that matter).  Fear is nothing more than unconscious thought…careless attention if that makes any sense.  Attention to that which is not real, be it the future or the past.

Now is real…my patient with their hope and willingness to know more about what causes health…is real.

So today I am Present.  Nothing else exists.

Mark Twain said it rather pointedly….

“There is no distinctly native American criminal class…save Congress.”

Mark Twain

A favorite author, Robert Fulghum, also said… “All I really need to know I learned in Kindergarten”.

The basics…clean up after yourself, say you’re sorry and tell the truth.  Simple stuff, just the basic code of conduct that we expect from our leaders.

And here is another classic from Mr. Twain…

“Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself.” — Mark Twain

We are forced to observe and endure another round of comedy from Washington, D.C….the not so funny part is the fallout expected to come from these folks just not gettin’ along.  Not to mention the continued reinforcement of cynicism portrayed by the next generation of (hopefully) voters.

Our profession is not immune to this type of righteous grandstanding either.  Straights vs. mixers, full-spine vs. upper cervical, ICA vs. ACA, etc.  And now the ‘biggy’….whether prescribing (anything) is in the realm of chiropractic.

Fear plays a big part here.  Fear of not doing enough…not being enough.  If we can take an opportunity to non-emotionally step back and observe this…how rational is this fear?

We gain credibility and strength by being who we are.  Not by being right. Righteousness, the addictiong to being right, might very well be eroding the level of public confidence we have already attained.  Unification in our profession is needed, just as a bit of getting along is needed in D.C.

If we had no fear of being accepted…no fear of being ‘destroyed by the medics and medipractors’….how strong and  inviting would we appear to those we are so passionate about serving?

Someone asked me this morning what I thought about the impending shut down of our government….my answer might have appeared to be a bit cynical…reminds me of the story I heard about a medical strike years ago in India.  Statistically they found that death rates and illness went down

Might be this is a lesson we all need…portrayed by the folks in Washington, D.C. to more rational folks like us chiropractor’s….  Wishful thinking.

I think I’ll just keep adjusting the folks that show up today….keep my priorities straight and let the government folks do what they are going to do…  Just hopin’ they will remember the old lessons from kindergarten days.

In service,

Perry

Had a patient and good friend in the office today comment on a Rotary speaker yesterday…

Turns out it was a young chiropractor doing the speaking thing….taking his message of wellness to our local Rotary lunch meeting.  My friend reports that the information was great, the graphics in the Power Point very engaging and overall a fine presentation…

Then things got a little weird.  Like the shapeshifter in a sci-fi flick, the tone and message transformed into something completely different….  I could have written the script myself but waited for my good friend to finish his story.

“It was like he was a completely different person!”  “One minute he was talking about wellness, then his demeanor changed, even his posture when he started talking about the ‘deal’ he had for us”.

Yes.  The deal.  I will spend an hour building up chiropractic and myself as a professional wellness expert…then throw it all in the toilet by giving it all to you for just $20!  But wait, if you act today, I’ll give you a set ginsu knives!

People understand fair exchange…they understand value.  They respect our education and innately know that we offer something refreshingly different than the drugs and surgery so many others offer.  I remember one of my mentors years ago telling me that people will always pay for our X-rays and exams.  Yet we think that to be accepted we need to give them away.

Problem is…our integrity, credibility and value disappears as well.  Don’t get me wrong, there are many people hurting in this economy, it is good to have alternative scenarios to be able to serve those who are truly in need.  But this is the exception, not the rule.

Stay centered in the value of who you are and what you represent with that “D.C.” behind your name.  When you can observe that fear-based little guy (or gal) trying to exchange value for acceptance….move the other direction.  Stay centered in the ‘knowing’ of who you are and your connection to Source.  This will build solid faith in you as a wellness provider and teacher.

My friend was fascinated by how this played out at his Rotary lunch.  Knowing me so well after many years gave him an insight that maybe others didn’t have.  He saw a smart, professional looking man….shift into a weak imitation of credibility.   It didn’t have to play out that way, nor does it need to for you.

Replace fear with knowing peace.  Weakness with certainty…

Until next time….
