I was out on my daily walk this morning in the hills of Seattle and paused for a moment by a monument in Volunteer Park, one of the many beautiful oases here. The monument was erected in the park in the 1950′s to commemorate the sacrifice and courage of those who fought and died in the Spanish-American was at the turn of the last century…freeing from oppression the peoples of Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines.
“Let We Forget” was the caption at the head of the monument and reminding us of the meaning of the name ‘Volunteer Park’. As our society forgets, so we repeat. The debate of this week (which I serendipitously and somewhat intentionally missed) brought again to the forefront the banality and irrelevance of current politics. More posturing and promises, defamation and libel….all in the name of democracy and the “American People”.
Fear is still the mainstay and common thread of discourse and grandstanding. Allowing and respect for moral courage and sacrifice seems to be far down the list. When will we learn? Must we continue in excess while basic services, school programs and domestic infrastructure continue to deteriorate?
I see similar threads of well-meaning conflict within our own profession. All based on fear. Of lack, of opposition and the irrational threat of death of personal position or identity.
Allowing and respect for the ‘other’ is the answer. And as Tolle reminds us…fear of the ‘other’ is often at the root of most human oppression and suffering.
The good news…we can, on an individual basis refuse to play the game of duality. Us vs. Them. Good vs. Bad. Straight vs. Mixer. Right vs. Wrong.
Allowing. Perhaps the most difficult, yet simplest path to peace.
Namaste to all on this great day…
